Fjord or Sound?

The Demi-God Tu-te-raki is said to have carved out the fjords with his adze Te Amo No other expanation can be found !

It is really a beautiful and dramatic part of New Zealand

The west coast is deeply endented by 14 fjords on about 215 kms od shoreline .Deep mountains kind of surge of the ocean making for spectacular sight . Eastern Europeens sailors gave the name of Sounds to those dramatic valleys when sounds are in fact river valleys flooded because a land sinking below sea level . They did so just because they were not familiar with fjords. A fjord is created by glacial action producing U shaped valleys with steep cliffs ans is characterised by shallow entrance that quickly slope seaward to deep water . So the fjords here are still called Sounds but the region recognising the true nature of those inlets is named “Fjordland”; Rudyard Kipling said that the Milford Sound was certainly the 8th marvel of the world.
