Zen Story

After ten years of apprenticeship, Tenno achieved the rank of  Zen teacher. One rainy day, he went to visit the famous master Nan-in.  When he walked in, the master greeted him with a question,

"Did you leave your wooden clogs and umbrella on the porch?"

"Yes," Tenno replied.

"Tell me," the master continued, "did you place your umbrella to the left of  your shoes,
  or to the right?"

Tenno did not know the answer, and realized that he had not yet attained full awareness. So he became Nan-in's apprentice and studied under him for ten more years.

Zen Story

Après 10 ans de discipulat  Tenno finit par mériter le titre de maître zen . Un jour de pluie il alla rendre visite au fameux Maître Nan-in. Quand il s’avança le Maître l’accueillit par une question :

-  As-tu laissé tes sabots et ton parapluie sous le porche ?

-  Oui,  répondit , Tenno

- Dis moi , continua le maître ,  tes chaussures sont-elles  à gauche ou à droite de ton parapluie ?

Tenno ne put répondre et réalisa qu'il n'avait pas atteint la pleine conscience. Aussi devient-il le disciple  de Nan-in pour dix années de plus.
