While there, we had reserved a room at the Movenpick on Elephantine Island , an island planted in the Nile, a beautiful island with its two small Nubian villages and yet very little tourism around wich keeps them still quite authentic. We could view the first village from the pool side of that luxury hotel where we would spend a night. Two juxtaposed worlds that have nothing to do with each other, which does not even live in the same century. The hotel pool empties almost into the Nile (optical effect!). Unfortunately the cold north wind blowing from the desert was so strong that neither one nor the other would dare to put the bathing suit. The room view was superb and I had a great time watching the ballet of feluccas who spun on the huge river. At evening we did marvel to see the city illuminated from the top of the hotel's tower which stood quite inharmonious actually in the middleof the building. But the very top floor holds a but has a panoramic bar and restaurant with stonning views of the left bank

On Philae island stands the temple of Isis It used to be on Agika island but after the building of the old dam the temple was swamped for 6 months of the year . Toursuts were rowong among the submerged colums With the completion of the High Dam the temple would have desappeared under the waters if the UNESCO had not decided to move it on Philae island and to rebuilt it stone after stone 20 meters higher . This was done between 1972 and 1980...So Isis kept her sacred site !

.
300kms of golden sand, silence and aridity
A toilet lost in vastiyude
and then at the end of the road at the border of Sudan, in lower Nubia, a temple carved into the mountain, saved from the waters, sliced and then re-located
An incredible performance.
We spend the night in the village of Abu Simbel in a traditionnal welcoming Nubian guesthouse , a relaxing place with a view of Lake Nasser.
Hearing that the train connecting Cairo to Aswan will be 3 hours late, does not seem to disturb anyone on the station platform in Luxor . .. we will wait from 9am to noon patiently. Ahmed who will be Richard's driver when he will be moved to Aswan was waiting for us at the station after our 3 hours journey and quickly transferred us on this felluca where he will stay with us for a 2 hours beautiful sailing
enjoying the sunset.
Marine est arrivée
As soon as Fidelma had regained her misty shores , marine arrived carrying in a lovely way her soon to be baby . We quite soon were on our way to Aswan by rail with the idea of going to Abu Simbel, some 600 kms south of Luxor

In the Middle Ages there were about 36,000 boats along the Nile. Felluccas :The boats are small and low , mini cargo for transport, very close to the water .. They are sailing or rowing. Do not travel at night. Tourists family rent them today for slow tripson the Nile , to go from one island to another, down from Aswan to Kom Ombo ... The dahabyyas these boats , sailing or rowing, as of a very old kind as well . There was already used at , they the time of the pharaohs. Much more elaborated, they are the boats of the rich. The Nile's Rolls Royces. There are, in Luxor hundreds fellucas but only a dozen of dahabiyyas. They are inhabited full or part time and can also serve as a "luxurious charter" . I was invited to dinner, accompanied by Richard on one of them owned by a French aristocrat in Luxor for years who receives on board half of the world! A square room all dressed in white, very comfortable benches, a table set in style around which we are 9 to spend an evening quite extra - ordinary with the anthropologist who for more than 30 years has handled the restoration of Karnak's temple , a reknown extremely bright Italian journalist and his wife, a lybanaise woman that created on the right bank of a world knowned, boutique hotel and one french couple whose name would ring to your ears (you wear it sometimes on your shoulder if you can afford it). I was certainly a lot less erudite than the other guests who could declaim greak and latin and arabic poems and knew Racine's work by heart and could give so much details on the pharaonic life... but I really enjoyed myself to arbitrate brillant exchanges .

Fièvre du samedi soir
Every saturday in the beautiful garden by the swimming pool an open air restaurant is set . Specially installed for the weekly typical show around the egyptian buffet : oriental music, belly dancing, local food , egyptian wine and traditional dances , a great receipe for a memorable and magic evening . It is a special evening for me anyway as my second daughter, Marine, is arriving to join me for a long week ...
Richard's house figuring on the cover of the "Imagine Ireland" 2010. Needless to say that the phone is ringing . Wouldn't you like to book for a week such a romantic place ?
Unique Source
"Every living creature is born with a cartography registered on his chromosomes what the scientists call the genome;it is amazing to discover that the whole biological system of the universe follows the same rules as if originating from a single source that is remote controlling life in a synchronised fashion . it is the same genome that classifies the animal kingdom. Science, rational thinking and human knowledge only demonstrate that the origin of this universe is unique, intelligent and well organised . It also demonstrates that man is not the centre of it all but a very small point in an extremely huge universe ....

After a beautiful lunch the family want to show us the fields , the sugar cane . After trying the chicha ( waterpipe) with the men so we go to the green . All the cjhildren of course follow some on a cart, some on a donkey, some on a motobike, some running ahead of our car ! Peace was there waiting for us all. Peace and joy. What a great moment , chewing sugarcane all together in the shadow of a tree . Ready to go back to town by 4pm, the kids would not want us to go ,and made us promiss to come back the following week . So we did.
Dimanche 24 janvier
Mahmoud , Richard's driver offered to drive us out of town to show us how beautiful the countryside can be with his sharp green fields and the sugar canes's plantations . It happened that passing by a village some old friend of Mahmud recognised him and with enthousiasm invited the 3 of us for a welcome cup of tea. We enter his "farm" In a first huge open couryard first we saw the animals ( donkeys, cows, sheeps, goats, ducks, chicken ) Then we entered an other building and what a wonderful surprise . It was bread's day . 2 or 3 women were baking lots of loafs of bread in a traditional oven . We are told that 6 brothers are living in this sort of big compound , 6 brothers , their wifes and their children . Each family has its own house with a communicating courtyard ...The cousins fly from one to the other following us all over as we visit their homes screaming with excitment and joy ! In ons of the courtyard a huge pancake board . What a surprise ! The pancakes here are exactly the same ones than the "crêpes" in Brittany . We were later served a wonderful lunch with farm's chicken , beans, rice, salad, fruits salad . Some tricky children even manage to follow us to the managed retreat....
Pour en revenir à leurs oignons
On the tuesday we went to the New Gurna 's market . People coing from the country near by , sat in the dust selling their very good home made products. Their cawly flowers looked huge . Hope it is not due to too much fertilizers.
You just have to dee it once in a life time ! I did . Still, to stones I prefer people, living people, a lot /
